William Browne

William Browne (1590-1645)

  1. Born at Tavistock in Devonsire in 1590.
  2. studied in Exeter college, Oxford.
  3. Browne however, was more interested in poetry than law.
  4. He returned to Oxford, in middle life, as tutor to the Earl of Caernarvon. After this, the Earl of Pembroke appointed his in office. He received the patronage and lived with the family of the Earl of Prembroke. Browne did at Ottery-St-Mary in 1645.
  5. His pastorals are written in heroic couplets and contain vivid descriptions of nature. Calling Browne, “One of the sweetest pastoral writers in the world.”,
  6. The critic Henry Neele lists his merits and states that Browe’s scenery is ‘English’. the critic Henry neele lists his merits and states that Browne’s scenery is ‘English’. “He takes us to the leafy shores of Devon and the fertile banks of Tamar and describes their beauties with the ardour of a lover and the truth of a painter.” Neele further adds that Browne’s works are rich in poetry and imagination.
