Thomas Carew

Thomas Carew (1594 – 1640)

  1. Born at West Wickham in Kent in 1594-95.
  2. Educated in Merton College, Oxford and the Middle Temple in London.
  3. Works: His first essay in the genre of the country house poem was To Saxham. It imitated  Ben Johnson’s praise of the Sidney family in his most famous country house poem, To Penhust.
  4. His first published poem was verses prefixed to Thomas May’s comedy The Heir.
  5. A Repture.
    1. is considered to be one of his best poems.
  6. Lyrical lines:
    1. ‘Ask me no more where love bestows’
    2. ‘He that loves a rosy cheek’
