Telling India’s Story Through Data: A Workshop on Sample Surveys
In an era where data-driven decisions shape policy outcomes, the ability to critically engage with survey data has never been more crucial. Telling India’s Story Through Data: A Workshop on Sample Surveys offers a deep dive into the design, execution, and interpretation of sample surveys, tools that are increasingly central to the development sector.
Held on June 14, 2025, via the IDEASx Platform, this intensive one-day workshop will equip participants with both the theoretical grounding and practical skills needed to navigate the complexities of quantitative surveys. From understanding how sample surveys differ from censuses to identifying the strengths and limitations of survey data, participants will be guided through the full lifecycle of a survey, from conceptualization and sampling to analysis and estimation.
Led by experts Dr. Shamindra Nath Roy (Assistant Professor, IDEAS, JGU) and Mr. Gurkirat Singh (Senior Research Associate, Centre for Policy Research), the sessions will also introduce participants to one of India’s most influential datasets, the NSS Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES). Through hands-on exercises, attendees will learn how to access, process, and interpret this data responsibly.
Whether you’re a development practitioner, researcher, data journalist, or just passionate about using data for social impact, this workshop is a unique opportunity to sharpen your skills and think critically about the role of surveys in shaping narratives and policies in India.
