Michael Drayton

Michael Drayton 1563- 1631

  1. born at Hartshill in Warwickshire in 1553 and was buried in Westminister Abbey.
  2. First work was a verse paraphrase of parts of the Old testament and Apocrypha: The harmony of The Church 1591
  3. Next work: Idea, the Shepherd’s Garland 1593, written in pastoral form with 9 ecologues
  4. Other Works:
    1. Ideas Mirror 1594: a collection of love sonnets
    2. Endymion and Phoebe 1594: an erotic epyllion

  5. In his early versions of the idea poems, drayton identified Mary sidney herbert, Countess of Pembroke and Lucy as ideas and celebrated them as ideal patrons. in his later versions, he identified Anne Goodyer Rainsford( daughter of his patron0 as ” Modest Idea, flowre of womanhood/ That rowland hath so highly Deifide.”

    2. This work earned drayton the title ” our English Ovid”. As this was written imitating Ovid’s heroids.
