Gavin Douglas

Gavin Douglas (1475 – 1522)

  1. Scottis bishop, poet and translator
  2. Well known for his various translations of Virgil’s Aeneid into Scot.
  3. He was appointed provost of St Giles Church, edinburgh, about 1501.
  4. Works:
    1. The Palace of Honor
      1. A poem dedicated to James IV.
      2. Written inΒ Older Scots( the language descendant of the language spoken by the 12th century English immigrants to the burghs of Southern and Eastern Scotland)
      3. Written in the form of a dream vision.
    2. Translation of Virgil’s Aeneid in 1513
      1. Included 12 original books of Aeneid and 13th book composed by Mapheus Vegius in 1428.
      2. Written in decasyllabic rhyming couplets for each individual book.
