Philip Massinger (1583 – 1640) – Playwright – The Age of Milton

KEYWORDS: Age of Milton, The Age of Restoration, Commonwealth Age, Plays and Dramas in The Age of Milton.

Massinger was born at Salisbury and educated at Oxford. In London he started writing plays for the King’s Men Comapany. Massinger in the early career showed interest in drama to finance himself, He collaborated with some older playwrights like Fletcher. Fletcher has a great influence over him. The comedies of Massinger got much more popularity than others. His blank verse, plot construction, and the sense of theatre made him one of the best playwrights in his time. He often deals with the politics of the time. Repetition is one of the weaknesses he has, except some of his characters like Sir Giles Overreach in A New Way to Pay Old Debts and Luke Frugal in The City Madam, his characters are typically types rather than individual personalities. His women characters are often shameless and villains are villainous. Massinger has a serious tone in his narration causing scholars to find lack of humour in him.
