Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon (1609 – 74) – Prose Writer During The Age of Milton (1608-74)

Hyde was born at Wiltshire and learnt Law at Oxford and became a member of the House of Commons. At the beginning he supported the Parliamentary Side but changed to Royalists due to mismatch in beliefs regarding the Church. He accompanied the young Charles into exile after the downfall of the Royalists, but Restoration restored his fame and he got appointed as the Lord Chancellor and later as the Earl of Clarendon. He was exiled in 1667. He was buried in Westminister Abbey.

WORKS

1. History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England (1646 – 1667): The work published only after 1704. Though the work is not well considered as complete but the narration is strong and highly based on the self exerience. The sentences are long, rich with figures of speech. The text is an important document in regards to its historic significance.
