Joseph Addison

Joseph Addison (1672-1719)

  1. He was born in Milson, Wiltshire in 1672
  2. He became popular in literary and political circles, and became a subject of jealousy to Pope, Swift and even to his close friend Steele.
  3. Works:
    1. His Latin poem “The Peace of Ryswick” (1697) won him friendship with Dryden, and a pension of 300 Euro a year.
    2. His poem “The Campaign” written on the victory in the Battle of Blenheim, particularly the lavish praise of Marlborough, the general, won him political admiration.
    3. His “Cato” in which he has observed the 3 unities on classical lines, lacks the necessary dramatic force and is hardly read now.
    4. Addison is one of the greatest essayists.
