Earl of Surrey, Henry Howard (1516 – 1547)

  1. The eldest son of Lord Thomas Howard.
  2. Henry took the courtesy title of Earl of Surrey in 1524 when his father succeeded as 3rd Duke of Norfolk.
  3. Surrey was first to develop the sonnet form used by William Shakespeare and translated book II of Virgil’s Aeneid, making the first use of blank verse in English in his translation of Book II and IV in Virgil’s Aeneid, Book 4 was published in 1554 and book 2 in 1557
  4. Improved the versification of Wyatt’s sonnets. Wyatt introduced sonnet into English, it was Surrey who gave them the rhyming meter and the division into quatrains that now characterises the sonnets variously named English, Elizabethan or Shakespearean sonnet.
